Jakarta, InfoPublik - Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara requested the House of Representatives (DPR) to reduce articles in the Draft Law on Personal Data Protection in order to speed up the completion of the legislation.

"Simplification must be carried out immediately," said Rudiantara at a Hearing at the Indonesian Parliament Building, Jakarta, Monday (13/5).

Currently the government is harmonizing the draft law and has sent a letter to the president before further discussion with the House members could be conducted.

The simplification is expected to make the discussion with the House’s Commission I faster so that the law could be enacted at the plenary meeting during this last meeting session.

The minister added that the law is very urgent for the public in conducting digital transactions. The potential for detrimental personal data theft could be minimized by the promulgation of the law.

Nowadays, all sectors, including health and transportation, have provided digital transaction services. They carry out digital transactions enabled by the internet.

"Telecommunication operators must be able to protect personal data obtained," he concluded. (Reporter: Tri Antoro, Translator: Erik Limantara)
